Cochlear Implant Group
Welcome to our Web Site!
The Cochlear Implant support group has developed a Cochlear Implant Handbook for prospective and new cochlear implant users (this is a large PDF file - please be patient). For a printed version of this handbook, please contact the CHHA-NL office.
This group is open to Newfoundland and
Labrador parents of children with a cochlear implant(s) or any adults with
cochlear implants. We are a volunteer group that meets monthly or more
frequently as needed. Each meeting is guided by an agenda to address action
items initiated by the group and includes time to share experiences and learn
from others. The meetings can be teleconferenced so those outside of St. John’s
area can participate.
The principle objectives of this group are to:
·
provide hope and support to parents and those with cochlear
implants;
· promote services that enhance speaking and hearing;
· advocate for equipment availability; and
· increase awareness of this group
· help people achieve informed choices regarding CI surgery,
· assist people to live well with the device, and
· address gaps in services and resources pre and post implant.
Some members of this group are also members of the Newfoundland and Labrador chapter of VOICE, a national organization that works to ensure that all hearing impaired children have the right to develop their ability to listen and speak and have access to services which will enable them to listen and speak. A recent news story from the Hearing Loss Association of America on vaccines and cochlear implants
Please discuss any concerns you may have with your family doctor. The Centre for Disease Control (United States) has a detailed explanation of specific vaccines that CI children need www.cdc.gov/vaccines. Again, please check with your family doctor or cochlear implant specialist for any differences in vaccines in Canada.
