2008 Branch Activity Archive

On January 14, 2008 we had another branch meeting.
 
On January 15, 2008 the branch ordered two pocket talkers and 1 phone amplifier from NL Hearing Health Center. These can be loaned out to individuals.
 
On January 22, 2008 Cyril received an email from member Betty Parsons stating she heard from Wendy Christensen, Health Labrador. Wendy told her that our hospital is indeed getting permanent hearing testing equipment. The new audiologist is going to ensure that it is set up with small kids in mind.
 
On January 22, 2008 Treasurer Fred Loxton attended the town council meeting where he brought up the issue of excessive and unnecessary snowmobile noise. He was informed that there was a noise policy in place and anyone with a complaint should bring it directly to the town manager.

In the January 28th edition of the Labradorian, three articles related to hearing loss appeared : an article about our new audiologist Joan Harron; an article about a meeting of the town council where our treasurer, Fred Loxton, attended and brought up the subject of excessive noise pollution caused by snowmobiles; and Cyril’s regular monthly column. Lots of public awareness this week!
 
On February 4, 2008 Cyril completed a branch survey for CHHA national.
 
On February 8, 2008 Myrtle Barrett, CHHA-NL President, informed Cyril that two of our branch’s members, Michelle Baikie and Dave Massie, were asked to be part of the National Outreach Committee.
 
On February 18, 2008 our branch received a banner with our branch’s name on it. Thanks to Leon Mills, Executive Director of CHHA-NL for making this possible. The banner will be put to good use at public functions such as The Big Land Fair.
 
On February 25, 2008 the branch held its monthly meeting. The guest speaker was Sandra Cahill from The NL Hearing Health Centre. The branch purchased two pocket talkers, ear buds, neck loop, and a telephone amplifier from NL Hearing Health Centre and she demonstrated how to use them. She also talked about the services she provides. It was very informative.
 
On February 27, 2008 Cyril emailed several people to find out what the government plan was for those who cannot afford to purchase hearing aids. He had replies from Joan Harron, Audiologist, Myrtle Barrett, President of CHHA-NL, Hon. Shawn Skinner , Annette Michelin (Hearing Helper), and Alison Day (CHHA-NL Coordinator of Outreach).
 
On February 29, 2008 Cyril received an email from Joan Harron thanking him for the column he wrote about audiologists. She said it was brought up at a meeting of Health Labrador in St. Anthony.
 
On March 10, 2008 Cyril contacted the town council asking for someone to attend the branch’s next meeting and talk about the town’s policy on noise pollution. The mayor will be attending the meeting on March 24th.
 
On March 17, 2008 Cyril contacted Martha MacDonald, committee member for the new Mealy Mountain Collegiate auditorium, asking if an audio loop or some such system is included in the design for the new building. She contacted some people and found out that indeed it is!
 
On March 17, 2008 Cyril sent an email to the Director of the Goose Bay Airport Corporation to get an update on the airport’s renovations and if our requests for improvements regarding accessibility for the hearing impaired is still being considered. She told him that she would forward the email to head honcho, Mr. Price. Cyril is waiting on a reply from Mr. Price.

March 19: In an email from Martha MacDonald of the Mealy Mountain Auditorium committee, it was stated that the new auditorium will be equipped with an audio loop.
 
March 24: Branch meeting. Guest speaker was Mayor Leo Abbass. He informed us that he is on the boards of the Goose Bay Airport Corporation and the Mealy Mountain Auditorium committee. He will do his best to make sure both places are fully accessible for the hearing impaired. He said he would try to get the town council chambers wired and he offered free photocopying service to our branch.
 
March 25: Treasurer Fred Loxton attended the town council meeting and said the council is very supportive of the mayor’s proposal to wire the chambers with an audio loop. Councillor Jim Saunders said he noticed improvements in sound at the airport.
 
April 01: Vice-president Dave Massie heard from Aliant Pioneers. They will install a loop in the Friendship Centre and Stan Oliver of the centre will purchase an amplifier.
 
April 15: Cyril nominated the branch for two awards which will be handed out at the International Congress in Vancouver.
 
April 16: Cyril applied to PAL requesting an airline ticket for Dave so that he could travel to the Hearing Health Fair in Grand Falls-Windsor. On April 29, Erica from PAL phoned Cyril and granted this request. Later she set our branch up to get corporate rates and granted us one free ticket per year.
 
April 28: Cyril's column on Induction Loops appeared in the Labradorian.
 
April 28: Cyril sent ads to the TV roll-up and the paper about assistive technology loans.
 
May 01: Dave was presented with an airline ticket from Erica of PAL. A picture was taken for the Labradorian and it appeared in the next issue.
 
May 05: Branch meeting. Guest speaker: Joan Harron, audiologist with Health Labrador. She gave a good insight on the services she has to offer. She also offered to get Beltone to pay for Dave’s rental car for the hearing health fair which Beltone so graciously did.
 
May 13: The executive set up a display at the Melville Public Library and donated 5 books on hearing related matters to the library. A photo was taken and it appeared in the paper 2 weeks later.
 
May 16: Received 10 books of Dream Home tickets.
 
May 24-25: Dave and Hannah attended the Hearing Health Fair in GF-Windsor. They found it very rewarding and informative.
 
May 24: Sold Dream Home tickets at the Firemen’s Flea Market.
 
May 26: Cyril’s column on Captioning appeared in the Labradorian.
 
June 01: Don Lockhart of the United Church Building Committee says he will meet with us regarding audio loop for the new church.
 
June 02: Received a second hand photocopier from the library.
 
June 03: Received a Christmas quilt on which we will sell tickets in the fall.
 
June 09: Branch meeting.
 
June 10: Received an email from Alison saying that the Speech Reading Workshop will take place on Oct. 20-25.

June 19:  Attended a public forum on persons with disabilities presented by the Independent Living Resource Centre.   Other members of our branch were in attendance as well.

July 2-5:  Attended CHHA & IHOH Congress in Vancouver.  Our branch won the Betty Moulton Award.

July 7:  Received lottery license to sell tickets on a Christmas quilt.

July 7:  Air Canada offered to donate tickets on a trip for two pending certain criteria.

July 9:  Received word from Leon that CHHA has approved funding for infant hearing screening equipment for HVGB hospital.

July 24:  Received an email from Air Canada stating they will donate the ticket for us to raffle.

July 30:  Faxed a wellness grant application to St. John’s.  No reply to date.

Aug. 1:  Mailed Dream Home ticket stubs and money to Susan at CHHA.

Sept 9:  Branch meeting.

Sept: 13:  Our branch had an information booth at the Big Land Fair.

Sept. 13:  Found out from a nurse that the DPOAE equipment had arrived at the hospital and has been used.

Sept. 26-27:  Fred attended CHHA’s AGM & Retreat in St. John’s.

Oct. 1:  Joe & Laurie Tretina donated a teleconference system to our branch.

Oct. 2:  Donated a pocket talker to the Salvation Army Church.

Oct. 3:  Booked a table at the SPCA Fall Fair to sell tickets on quilt and Dream Home.

Oct. 6:  Branch meeting.

Oct. 13:  Booked a table at the Melville Public Library Fall Fair to sell tickets on quilt and Dream Home.

Oct. 20-26:  Some of our members attended the Speech Reading course.

Oct. 20:  Received a thank-you letter from the Salvation Army Church for our donation of pocket talker.

Oct. 20:  Branch executive, 2 parents, Alison, and 3 hospital staff had picture taken for the Labradorian re: infant hearing screening equipment.

Oct. 22:  Received Dream Home tickets.

Oct. 27:  Picture and article re: infant hearing screening equipment appeared in the Labradorian.

Oct. 27:  Attended a public conference on Poverty Reduction Strategy with MHA Skinner.

Oct. 28:  Diane Brown and I took part in the Tinnitus teleconference.

Nov. 2:  Received a donation of sign language material from Libra House.

Nov. 4:  Took part in the Meniere’s teleconference

Nov. 19: Sent an announcement to the Ad Channel and the Labradorian about the services our branch offers

Nov. 19: Sent an ad to the Ad Channel advertising Dream Home tickets

Nov. 25: Cyril attended a town council meeting and discussed proper use of their current PA system and gave information about the audio loop.

Dec. 03: Cyril attended the International Day of Persons with Disabilities sponsored by the Lake Melville Community Employment Centre and The Canadian Paraplegic Association.

Dec. 13: The winning ticket on the Christmas quilt was drawn.  The winner was Jan Motty.

Dec. 14: Received the Air Canada tickets (trip for 2) by Fed Ex which will be used as a fundraiser
